One of two Costa del Sol courses designed by Severiano Ballesteros, Alhaurín Golf has now debuted as a leg of of the Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit. This is the 12th year of the annual circuit, which offers the main prize of five week-long trips to the Dominican Republic. Located in a stunning natural setting in Alhaurín el Grande municipality, the course was in a magnificent condition for play, and was highly praised by those who had not teed up there before. The lunch that accompanied the prize ceremony included a live musical performance by singer Amelinde.
Helio Otero Díaz won category one (with 35 points), followed by Francisco Farfán Rueda and David Garrido Jiménez (both also 35). In category two, the top three finishers were Manuel Justo Luque (38 points), María Elena Zea Martín (34) and José Delgado Pardo (32).
Scratch winner José Quilis Serón (handicap 2) totalled 35 points. The 24-year-old local player from Alhaurín el Grande is a marvel with the driver in his hand. He was European long drive champion in 2019, and he achieved his best mark, 424 yards (387.7 metres), in a long drive championship in Germany. Interestingly, José Quilis did not win the prize for the longest drive at Alhaurín Golf: he missed out because, on the chosen hole, he hit his ball off the fairway by just one metre.
The prize for closest to the pin was won by Vicente Rodero Rodero, while the longest drive prizes went to Tatiana Kutnesova and David Guerrero Jiménez.
The scratch winner and top three finishers in each category received trophies and prizes including cases of wine from the Enate, Lau and Sommos bodegas (D.O. Somontano), and one dozen Bridgestone balls (Tiger Woods Special Edition for the scratch winner and E6 for the other players).
The winners of special prizes for longest drive (men and women) and nearest to the pin received cases of D.O. Somontano wine, balls and MyHedgeFund.club caps. There was also a raffle and a magnificent lunch in the clubhouse.
Alhaurín Golf was the sixth of 30 tournaments scheduled to be held during the 12th edition of this hugely popular open amateur circuit, organised by Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine. From February to September, the Circuit will cover the Andalucian provinces of Málaga, Cádiz, Huelva, Almería, Sevilla and Granada, in addition to Madrid, Salamanca and Segovia, with most of the events being held on the Costa del Sol.
The Circuit’s grand finale, which will decide the five winners of trips to the Dominican Caribbean, will be held at La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort on 24 September, followed by a gala dinner.
Access to the final will be direct for the winners of each category and the leading scratch player in all the qualifying tournaments, while the rest of the places in the final will be awarded based on the Benahavís Ranking, calculated from points obtained in each leg.
The Circuit is sponsored by ThirdHome.com, MyHedgeFund.club, Benahavís Town Hall, Sanitas and Bahía Príncipe Golf, and the main collaborators are D.O. Somontano, Holiday Golf, Holiday Golf Estates and Fairway+blue. Cadena SER and Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine are the Circuit's official media outlets.
